Teachers, Trust, and Taking Steps to Protect Your Child

Teachers, Trust, and Taking Steps to Protect Your Child

By Laura Buddenberg and Kathy McGee
Boys Town Center for Adolescent and Family Spirituality

We’ve all read the headlines: “25-Year-Old Teacher Runs Away with Student.”

Most of us think it could never happen to our kids and our families. But it is happening, all across America, from coast to coast and border to border.

What can parents do to keep their kids safe at school?

First, we must all remember that our children’s teachers really are acting as our “stand-ins” when they are with our kids at school.  That means that although teachers don’t have all the same rights and responsibilities as parents, they should act with “parental-style” boundaries toward our kids.  A teacher’s first priority is the total health and safety of the students in his or her care. This includes not only their physical health, but also their emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual well-being.

Teachers are not there to be students’ friends.  They are there to instruct, give grades and consequences, and provide safety.  The vast, vast majority of teachers are compassionate and dedicated professionals who would never harm a child.  But there are teachers who have poor boundaries.  They may care too much about being popular with students.  They may fall into the trap of being a “friend” instead of just being “friendly.”  Unfortunately, acting like a child’s peer instead of like a child’s teacher is one of the opening tactics of an abuser.  Here are some warning signs of potential trouble:

  • A teacher spends time alone (no other adults are present) with one student or a group of students.
  • A teacher buys gifts for and pays exclusive attention to just one student or a special group of students.
  • A teacher talks, dresses, and acts like students.
  • A teacher discusses his or her personal life with or in front of students.
  • A teacher asks a student inappropriate personal or sexual questions.
  • A teacher instant messages, texts, or calls students without notifying parents.
  • A teacher has no friends among his or her peers.

None of these signs mean for sure that a predator is at work.  In fact, these situations usually are the result of poor or immature judgment, and things do improve with some discussion and solid direction.  However, if you do notice any of these red flags, here are the next steps you should take:

  • Write down your concerns, as well as specific descriptions of what you saw or heard. Include specific dates and times if possible.
  • Ask to talk with a school administrator.  Stay calm, describe your concerns, and ask the administrator to let you know of any action taken.
  • Talk to your child about what happened and how he or she felt about it. Was your child scared, worried, concerned, or confused?  Share this information with the school administrator.

Remember, no one knows your child like you do and no one loves your child as much as you do.  The best protection we can offer our children is our faithful involvement in their education and a solid awareness of the adults to whom we entrust them.

Teaching Children Skills to Prevent Abduction

Teaching Children Skills to Prevent Abduction

Going Beyond "Don't Talk to Strangers"

"Rather than teaching children to fear strangers, which is at best, woefully inadequate, we need to use positive messages," says Dr. Broughton. "Children need to learn skills and confidence, not fear and avoidance." says Daniel Broughton, M.D., a pediatrician at Mayo Clinic

  • Children should know their name, address and phone number (with area code) so, if lost, they can be reunited with their family.

  • Older children should know parents' work numbers.

  • Away from home, older children should always be with a friend, always tell an adult where they will be, and say "no" if they feel threatened or uncomfortable.

  • Children need to know that appropriate strangers -- store clerks or police officers -- can offer assistance if they are lost or need help.

  • Parents need to listen, and respect their children's feelings. Children can sense unease in inappropriate relationships. They'll likely share their concerns if parents routinely take all of their concerns in life seriously rather than downplaying or shaming them.

Children need to know that they do not need to kiss, hug, touch or sit on the lap of anyone, relative or not, if they do not wish to. This respect for their wishes translates into self-respect and the ability for children to say no to unwanted contacts without generating fear.

  • Parents need to supervise children who use the Internet. Although still relatively uncommon, the practice of pedophiles and child molesters approaching children on the Internet is occurring more frequently.

  • Parents need to keep reinforcing safety messages through middle school and high school. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, most victims of nonfamily abductions were 12 years or older (58 percent). Most were girls (65 percent).

  • Parents should realize the limitations of participating in programs where children are fingerprinted or otherwise identified. These programs can frighten children and raise fears in adults without giving perspective on the real nature or risk of abduction.
  • Parents should keep on hand a high-quality recent photo of each child, such as a school photo. Law enforcement officials consider photos the best tool in finding missing children.

  • Parents should promptly report a missing child. The Amber Plan, the national program to immediately flood a region with news of an abduction, is credited with helping to recover more than 130 children since it started two years ago.

Chicopee Police have issued an alert for a missing child

Chicopee Police have issued an alert for a missing child.

Chicopee Police said Justice R. Brown, 2, was taken by her father Joel K. Brown, 43 at around 5:35 p.m. Wednesday. She is described as a black female, approximately three feet tall and 33 pounds. She was last seen wearing a white shirt, red shorts, and purple sandals. Police said Brown has braided hair on the top and curly hair in the back.

Joel Brown is described as a black male, 6'2", 180 pounds with dreadlocks, and unknown clothing.

The vehicle is described as a black or blue, four door car, with a possible partial Florida plate of R858L or RB58L. Police said Brown has been residing in either Florida or North Carolina.

Police said they learned of the abduction when officers were sent to 999 Memorial Drive at the Arbors for a domestic dispute. Witnesses told police that the father assaulted the missing girl's mother and took the child. The mother, Robin Brown, of Chicopee returned to the police station to file a report. Police said they were advised of an active restraining order made by the mother against the father that was issued in February 2008, for a prior domestic assault against the mother.

Chicopee Police are working with Massachusetts State Police to issue a nationwide Amber Alert for Justice Brown. Police advise that if you see the child, her father, or the vehicle described, please call 911.
